Should you buy a cordless steam iron?

Using a cordless steam iron

When you think about purchasing an iron, it is likely to be a steam iron that you have in mind. Featuring their own water tanks, these irons produce steam which helps to relax the fabric and encourages creases to drop out as you use it.

Steam irons with the highest steam output work best as they are more efficient at removing wrinkles from your clothes, and most models tend to come with the ability to self-clean. However, when it comes to buying an iron you have two options: corded and cordless.

Here, we look at whether you should buy a cordless steam iron, or if a more traditional corded steam iron is the right option for you.

Pros of cordless steam irons

Of course, the main benefit of a cordless steam iron is that it will give you the freedom to move whilst ironing, without an annoying cord getting caught on, and wrapped around, things.

This type of iron means that you have no restrictions when moving around the ironing board, and don’t have to keep flicking a cord out of the way when trying to complete this chore.

Another benefit of cordless irons is that they are typically lighter than corded examples, making them a little easier to use.

Cons of cordless steam irons

The biggest problem that people have with cordless steam irons is that they need to be constantly charged whilst in use. This is done through placing the iron onto its charging base plate frequently whilst you’re ironing. The base plate keeps the iron hot, and without this you’ll find that you’re using a lukewarm iron quite quickly.

This is not ideal if you have big piles of ironing to do, or large items to iron, and can make the whole job a bit slower, although they can be very convenient if you’re only ever ironing a small number of items at a time.

Another negative of using a cordless steam iron is that they have built-in batteries, so when the battery dies you will need to replace the whole iron, meaning it may not be very cost effective in the long run.

Things to look out for when buying a cordless steam iron

If you have decided that a cordless steam iron is the right choice for you, there are a few things to look out for. Firstly, a steam shot feature is great as it can help to eliminate tough creases in areas that are tricky to reach.

Keep an eye out for an anti-calcium feature (especially if you live in a hard water area), and consider the size of the iron’s water tank as the larger this is, the longer you’ll be able to iron for.

Now you know the pros and cons of cordless steam irons, you’re ready to make your home appliance choice today.
